This tab defines other useful features to customize your family pages.
Researchers visiting your website will appreciate seeing source citations. GED-GEN automatically generates footnotes and the links to them. A visitor wishing to see a footnote simply clicks on the footnote number and that footnote is displayed. Each family page begins numbering footnotes from number 1.
There are two footnote formats. The first places footnotes at the bottom of each family page. When a visitor clicks on a footnote, the browser moves to that footnote.
The other format is a frames-based dual view. Footnotes appear in a separate frame at the bottom of the browser window. When a visitor clicks on a footnote, the footnote is displayed in the lower frame and the upper frame is left in position. This allows one to view both the family page and the footnote at the same time.
| Option | Meaning |
| Include source citations | Place a check here to enable footnote generation. Then choose one of the following options: at end of each family page Footnotes are placed at the end of the family page. When a visitor clicks on a footnote number, the browser repositions to the footnote. The visitor must click the browser's back button to return to the original position.
Footnotes are placed in a separate frame window that appears at the bottom of the browser window. When a visitor clicks on a footnote number, the footnote appears in the frame window. |
| Include comments | Check this option to display your comments about each citation. Comments are enclosed in square brackets. |
| Include additional details | Check this option to display additional details about each citation. This may include the type of event that was responsible for the source entry being recorded, the role a person played in the event, and a quality assessment. |
| (This option is applicable only if you generate a bibliography.) Check this option to include a hypertext link from each footnote to its corresponding entry in the bibliography. This allows a visitor to quickly view the bibliographic information associated with a given footnote. Otherwise visitors can use the link to the bibliography page to browse. Links are not included with "Ibid" footnotes. | |
| Use superscript numbers in group sheet | Place a check here to display footnote reference numbers as superscript text:
sample1 Footnotes in the family group sheet are normally displayed within parentheses: sample (1) Superscript text is not allowed in the preformatted text area of a family group sheet. However most Internet browsers display it properly and if you are not concerned with HTML conformance, you may prefer superscript text. However if you choose a proportional font by clearing the Use non-proportional font option on the Attributes tab, GED-GEN does not generate preformatted text areas. In this case superscript text will not violate HTML conformance. |
A bibliography is a list of your research sources. GED-GEN can generate both bibliography and repository web pages. The Surname, Index and Family pages will include links to the Bibliography page and from there, to the Repository page. As mentioned under Footnotes above, you can also include a link from each footnote to its corresponding bibliography entry.
You can generate a standalone bibliography using the pull-down menu on the Generate button. A standalone bibliography uses the settings you define here, but it does not include links to your Surname and Index pages. This is useful if you want a bibliography elsewhere on your website, separate from your Family pages.
| Option | Meaning |
| Check this option to generate bibliography pages. | |
| Include comments | Check this option to display your comments about each source. These are your notes about a source, not the actual text from a source. They are enclosed in square brackets. |
| Entries per page | Specify the number of bibliography entries to display on one page. Additional entries are displayed on subsequent pages. |
Repository information describes the physical location of a research source. Repository pages are optional, but you can generate them only if you generate Bibliography pages. Each bibliography entry includes a link to its associated entry on a repository page. If no repository data are available, repository pages are not generated.
| Option | Meaning |
| Check this option to generate repository pages. | |
| Include comments | Check this option to display your comments about each repository. They are enclosed in square brackets. |
| Entries per page | Specify the number of repository entries to display on one web page. Additional entries are displayed on subsequent pages. |
| Ignore entries with this prefix | Some genealogy programs automatically generate repository entries when the repository is not given. To avoid displaying these entries, specify a prefix here. GED-GEN will then exclude all repository entries that start with this prefix.
To match, the prefix must begin the repository name and have the same upper- and lower-case letters. Remaining characters in the name after the prefix are ignored for purposes of comparison. For example if you specify Not Given, repository entries that have this prefix will be ignored. These include "Not Given." and "Not Given (See Notes)." A repository entry like "Repository Not Given" would not match because it does not begin with the specified prefix. |
Your GEDCOM file must contain Source records for a bibliography to be generated. Otherwise bibliographic information, if available, is displayed in each footnote.
Many genealogy programs do not allow you to enter complete bibliography and/or repository information. Few programs utilize all the source citation fields specified in the GEDCOM standard. If your GEDCOM file includes limited information, you may not see complete bibliography and/or repository entries.
Hint: You may be able to display more information by allowing GED-GEN to interpret nonstandard GEDCOM tags. See Process nonstandard tags under "GEDCOM" on the Program tab.

| Place a check here to remove lifespan phrases from any living authors in your footnotes and the bibliography. If you include the lifespan of an author (e.g., "Smith, John (1932- )") and you wish to maintain their privacy, this option will remove the " (1932- )" from their name. Some researchers include lifespan information to help identify a source citation, especially when several family members may have the same given name. |
= Feature is available only in the registered version.
The information displayed for each entry type is given below. Remember you can override attributes like font styles and line spacing using an external Cascading Style Sheet (CSS).

If you want to protect the privacy of living individuals in your GEDCOM file, you may choose to exclude them completely. If so, select Exclude living individuals.
You may also include living individuals, but limit the information displayed about them. Select Include living individuals. You may then optionally restrict how they are displayed. If you include living individuals, but do not select any filters, then all individuals will be displayed.
| Option | Meaning |
| Display full names |
Choose this option to display names of living individuals as they would normally appear. |
| Replace names with initials |
Choose this option to use initials in place of the given and middle names for living individuals. For example "John Quincy Adams" would appear as "J. Q. Adams." |
|
Choose this option if you want a certain phrase to appear in place of a living person's given and middle names. Also specify the phrase, for example, (Private). Note this affects a person's name only as a husband, wife or child on a family page. It does not filter a person's name in other places, like in your research notes and source citations. The phrase you specify will replace only a person's given name and not their surname. If John Doe is living, his name would appear as "(Private) Doe". |
|
| Check this option if you want a certain phrase to appear in place of a living person's date of birth or marriage. Also specify the phrase you want to appear. As with a name, this does not filter such dates in your research notes and source citations. | |
| You may choose to include notes and other facts on the Facts tab. If you do, you can
exclude all such notes and facts for living individuals. Simply check
this option. For instance if you chose to include Baptism facts on the Facts tab and then check the Exclude notes & facts box here, baptism facts will be displayed for everyone except living individuals. |
|
| Assume individuals are living when born after the year | GED-GEN normally considers an individual living if
there is no date in the person's date of death field. However you can
also specify a cut-off year. Individuals born after the cut-off year
are assumed to be living. If they were born in or before the cut-off
year, they are considered deceased. This option is useful when you have a large number of ancestors for whom you have not entered death dates. It is an approximation however. If an individual born in or before the cut-off year is still living, they will be considered deceased. Normally if an individual is deceased, but you do not know the date of death, you should enter one of the terms UNKNOWN, DEAD or DECEASED in the date field. Do this in your favorite genealogy program before exporting your GEDCOM file. If that program uses another term, be sure to specify it under GEDCOM on the Program tab. |
= Feature is available only in the registered version.
If you choose to filter living individuals, you will likely want to filter either names or dates, but not both. If you filter both, the index will be less useful. Visitors will be unable to distinguish between living individuals since all their names and lifespans will be "privatized."
This tab controls the Surname and Index pages.
| Option | Meaning |
| Display Soundex codes |
Check this option to display Soundex codes next to each surname on the Index pages. Soundex codes may assist in your genealogical research. They are a way of indexing surnames based on pronunciation. Codes are generated using the simplified Soundex algorithm. A second
code is displayed for some surnames. This code is generated using the
American Soundex algorithm or Miracode, which is sometimes used by the
US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA |
| Create GENDEX index file |
Check this option to generate a GENDEX file. This file was used in conjunction with the GENDEX server, which was an index of GEDCOM files on the Internet. That server may no longer be available, but the GENDEX file may be useful in other applications. GED-GEN creates a GENDEX.txt file in the destination folder along with your family pages. It contains a list of the individuals who appear on each family page. For each person it also lists the surname, the full name, the birth date and place, and the death date and place. If you selected any privacy filters, living individuals will be filtered in the GENDEX file too. The author of GED-GEN does not endorse or recommend any particular genealogy software or service. GED-GEN is not affiliated with the GENDEX server. |
| Number of individuals per page |
Specify the number of individuals GED-GEN should place on each index page generated. The index to your family pages is usually generated as a set of web pages. This avoids having one large page that takes a long time to load in a visitor's Internet browser. Specify a smaller number for more, but smaller files. Specify a larger number for fewer, but larger files. For instance if your GEDCOM file contains 5000 individuals, you may wish to have 1000 individuals per page, which would result in 5 index pages. If these files take too long to load, you could specify 500 individuals per page, resulting in 10 index pages. If your GEDCOM file contains 500 individuals, you may wish to have them all on one index page. The number you specify is an approximation. GED-GEN may place more or fewer individuals on an index page depending on where the page break might occur. |
The remaining options on this tab are used to convert E-Mail and Internet addresses that may appear in your genealogical data into actual hypertext links.
| Option | Meaning |
| Convert e-mail addresses to actual links |
Check this option if you want e-mail addresses in your GEDCOM file to be displayed as actual e-mail links. When GED-GEN encounters an e-mail address in your text, it instead will display a link to that e-mail address. This allows a visitor to your web page to click on the link to create an e-mail. E-Mail addresses must be prefixed with the string "mailto:" as described below. For example if the following line appears in your notes about an individual: Information obtained from mailto:me@mysite.com.
It will be displayed as: Information obtained from me@mysite.com.
|
| Convert Internet addresses to actual links |
Check this option if you want Internet addresses in your GEDCOM file to be displayed as actual hypertext links. When GED-GEN encounters an address, it instead will display a link to that website. A visitor to your web page who clicks on the link will go directly to that website. Internet addresses must be prefixed with the string "http:/" or "ftp:/" as described below. For example if the following line appears in your notes about an individual: Information obtained from http://www.sample.com.
It will be displayed as:
Information obtained from http://www.sample.com.
|
The conversion of Internet and e-mail addresses to actual links takes place only within research notes, marriage notes, source citations, imported text, and bibliography and repository entries. In order for Internet addresses to be recognized in your text, you must prefix them appropriately. If GED-GEN does not recognize an address, it will still display it as plain text.
An address must begin with one of the following prefixes:
For example "http://home.sample.com" is recognized, but "home.sample.com" is not. Furthermore:
