This tab defines the characteristics of the generated web pages.
Meta tags are used by some Internet search engines to classify and reference web pages. Meta tags are embedded in a web page header and are not directly visible to your website visitors.
Select a background color and/or a background image, and the page margins for your web pages.
| Option | Meaning | ||||||||||||||
| Color Code | Specify a web page background color. This is an HTML color code. Click to more easily select a color code. Note that if you specify a background image, then your background color might not be visible. | ||||||||||||||
| Background Image | You may choose a background image. Specify the name of an image file here, including a relative folder path. Leave this field empty if you do not want a background image. | ||||||||||||||
| Keep background fixed when scrolling web page | Your background image can remain fixed or it can scroll when you scroll the web page up or down. Place a check here to keep it from scrolling. | ||||||||||||||
| Margins | Specify the left and right, and top and bottom margins for your web pages. These values are expressed in pixels. If you use a background image that has a left-side border, you can specify a wider left margin to accommodate this border. | ||||||||||||||
| Field Alignment |
These options control the alignment of labels on your family group sheets. Labels are the words "Born:," "Married:," and "Died:" and so on.
|
These options determine the fonts used to display your web pages.
| Option | Meaning |
| Face | This field is the name of one or more fonts. In case a visitor to your website does not have a particular font installed, you should specify alternate font names, separated by commas, that will be used instead. The font names should appear in order of preference. For example Arial,Verdana,Helvetica means that if your visitor does not have the Arial font, his Internet browser will attempt to use Verdana, and so on. If a font name contains spaces, enclose it in quotation marks, like "Times New Roman". Click Default to specify Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif. The name sans-serif is a generic font. Other generic fonts you can choose are serif, monospace, cursive and fancy. Leave this field blank to use the browser's standard font. |
| Size | This is the font size for text that appears on your generated web pages. Choose Default to use the Internet browser's default size. Choose a smaller or larger font if desired. However if your text is too small or too large, visitors to your web site may find it difficult to read. Remember also that your visitors can adjust the font size in their Internet browsers. GED-GEN will generate some text using a smaller or larger font than the font size you specify. For example the title of the index page will appear larger than normal text. Any such text is always generated in a size relative to the font size you specify here. |
| Color Code | This is an HTML color code representing the font color. Click to more easily select a color code. Color code #000000 (black) is normally the default font color. |
| Use non-proportional font in group sheet and index |
Place a check here to use a non-proportional font within family group sheets and on the index pages. With a non-proportional font like Courier, each letter in a word has the same width. Thus dates for births, marriages and deaths are aligned in an easy to read format. If you prefer the font specified in the Face field above, clear the check next to this option. Your selected font will then be used everywhere. In this case your font is assumed to be proportional, where letters in a word can have different widths. Note
A proportional font requires additional HTML elements for field alignment. This increases the size of most generated web page files. Use of a proportional font may affect label and date field alignment. You may need to adjust the character spacing under Align fields for group sheet labels and under Align fields for place of birth, marriage and death. You may also want to enable Use superscript numbers in group sheet under "Source Citations."
Advanced Users
If you wish to use a non-proportional font other than Courier, keep this option enabled and override the following GED-GEN style in your own external Cascading Style Sheet (CSS): BODY.gg-body pre

These options affect the hypertext links used to navigate between your family pages, and other web pages.
| Option | Meaning | ||||||||
| Display links at top/bottom of page |
Display inter-page navigation links either at the top, the bottom, or both the top and bottom of each web page. These are the links to your home page, and the Surname, Index, Bibliography and Repository pages. If you disable both options, no navigation links will appear and you will probably want to specify your own links in the page headers and footers (see the Headers tab). |
||||||||
| Use lower-case destination file names |
Place a check here to convert linked file names to lower-case characters. Advanced Users
This option applies only to the links that GED-GEN creates to your own web pages. It affects the HREF= attribute of all links to your home page, and to individual biography and family narrative web pages. You should enable this option if such links result in a "Page not found" error after you transfer your web pages to your website. Many Internet Service Providers (ISP) distinguish between upper- and lower-case characters in a file name. For example a file named MyFile.html is different from a file named Myfile.html because the letter "F" is capitalized in one but not the other. A link to Myfile.html would result in a "Page not found" error if the file is actually named MyFile.html. Under Microsoft Windows, a file named MyFile.html in some cases could be listed as Myfile.html. When GED-GEN creates a link to such a file, it uses the name Windows assigns it (e.g., Myfile.html). Later when you transfer that file to your website, it might actually be named MyFile.html or even myfile.html. The link GED-GEN created will thus result in an error message when a visitor clicks on it at your website. If you enable this option, GED-GEN will convert the file name to all lower-case letters when it creates a link. These links should then work properly if the files at your website are also in all lower-case letters. Your File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program should have an option that forces all file names you transfer to be lower-case characters. |

| Use child's name as link to child's family page |
Place a check here to use a child's name as a link to that child's family page. On a parents' family page, if a child has a spouse, the child and spouse will appear on a separate family page. The link to this page is via the name of the spouse. If that child had more than one spouse, there is a separate page for each family. Each of these family pages is linked via the name of the corresponding spouse. When this option is enabled, the name of the child will also appear as a hypertext link. If the child had multple spouses, the child link will go to the final spouse, based on the order of spouses in the GEDCOM file. For example if a child had three spouses, the link via the child's name would display the family page of the third spouse. You must click on the name of the first or second spouse to see those family pages. |

You can include up to three additional links along with the inter-page navigation links on each web page. Inter-page navigation links are the links that appear at the bottom (or top) of the page:
You can link to other pages on your website, such as a genealogy report or chart. Link to other branches of your family tree if you have separate groups of GED-GEN web pages. You can also link to external websites or simply include a link to your e-mail address. These links will appear on every generated web page. They are not associated with a particular family page or individual.
| Option | Meaning | ||||||||||
| Include |
Place a check here to include this link along with your inter-page navigation links. The first extra link, if included, will appear to the left of the main links. The second and third links will appear to the right. For example: First | Home | Surnames | Index | Second | Third
|
||||||||||
| Surname page only | Check this option if you want this link to display only on the Surnames page. This allows better control of the hierarchy of your website. You may want some links to appear only on the "top level" page. The Surnames page is considered the main starting point for your family pages. | ||||||||||
| Display on second line |
Check this option to display this link on a separate line under the main inter-page navigation links. The length of the line containing the main links may become excessively wide. Each of the extra links that you choose to display on the second line will be on the same line. For example if the first and third extra links are set for the second line: Home | Surnames | Index | Second
First | Third |
||||||||||
| Link Destination |
Enter the web page file name that should open when a visitor clicks on this link. This is the href= attribute of the link. For example:
|
||||||||||
| Link Prompt |
This is a descriptive text phrase that gives a hint about the link. Depending upon the Internet browser, this prompt could display when you hold the mouse over the link. Or, it may display in the browser's status bar. This is the title= attribute of the link. Leave this field empty to omit this attribute. |
||||||||||
| Link Label |
This is the text phrase that will appear as the actual link. For example the first extra link can provide a link to your e-mail address:
The link would then appear on your family pages as: E-Mail | Home | Surnames | Index
|
||||||||||
| Frame Target |
Leave this option empty for normal operation. When a visitor clicks on the link, the destination web page will display in place of the GED-GEN web page. If you want the web page to display in a new Internet browser window, enter the reserved name _blank (i.e., an underscore character followed by the word blank). Advanced Users
If your GED-GEN family pages will appear within a frame window on your website, enter the name of a target frame to use in this link. This option controls the target= attribute. If you specify a name, the destination page will load in that frame when a visitor clicks the link. If you specify the reserved target name _top, the browser will break out of frames and load the destination page. If you want the destination page to load into the same frame as occupied by a GED-GEN web page, leave this field empty. GED-GEN will determine the appropriate target name depending upon whether footnotes appear in a separate frame window (i.e., target="_self" with no footnote frame, or target="_parent" with a footnote frame). In this case your destination page should not be your main frameset page. |
Dividers are horizontal lines that separate sections on a web page. For something fancier than a plain line, you can use images.
| Option | Meaning |
| Page-level Dividers | Page-level dividers can appear at the top and/or bottom of each web page. They separate the header and footer from the main body of a page. Choose to either exclude them, use plain lines, or use your own image files. If you choose Display most frequent surnames on the Features tab, a short line is also used to separate the list of surnames on the Surname page. It will have the same color as the Color Code option specified below. |
| Group Sheet Dividers | These dividers are used in the family group sheet sections of family pages. Thick lines surround the husband and wife sections while thin lines separate each child in the children's section. Choose to exclude these lines, use plain lines, or use image files. |
| Include Page-level dividers on Family pages | Check this box if you want page-level dividers to appear on family group sheet pages. Normally the family group sheet sections use plain divider lines, and page-level dividers may seem redundant. However if you use images for your page-level dividers, you may wish to include them on the family pages for consistency. |
| Color Code | This is an HTML color code representing the color of the default divider line. Click to more easily select a color code. |
To specify an image, enter the name of an image file, and include a relative folder path. Select "Stretch to full width" if you want the image to occupy the full width of the group sheet area. GED-GEN sets the image width to 100%, but keeps the height constant. If the image file does not yet exist, or it is not a GIF or JPEG file, the height specification will be omitted. This may cause the image to increase in height as well.
If your image file is a pattern you want to repeat across the page, select the image option, but leave the image file name empty. Then override the corresponding divider class in your own CSS file. For example you could override the top-of-page divider class with:

| External Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) | Leave this field blank if you do not use a CSS file.
Advanced Users
If you already use an external Cascading Style Sheet with your website, you can use it here too. You can incorporate your own styles for consistency with your other web pages. You can also override GED-GEN styles. Specify the name of one or more CSS files here. Separate each name with a semicolon (;) and list them in the order they should be included. If your file name already contains semicolons, substitute two semicolons for each. For example, ..\;test.css should be specified as ..\;;test.css. Each file name should include a relative folder path. Each time you click , a file is appended to the list. |
| File Prefix | You may specify a short prefix that will be added to every file name generated. This may help in maintaining these files separately from your other web page files. For example if you specify "grp" here, then each file will be prefixed by grp, as in grpf001.html. |
| File Extension | Specify the file extension to use for all generated files. This is commonly .html or .htm. |
| Copyright Notice | You may specify a copyright notice to be placed at the bottom of every web page generated. You must use HTML syntax. Click to automatically generate a copyright notice using the current year and the name you specified in the Author field above. |
