Individuals Tab

Use this tab to configure custom features for the individuals in your GEDCOM file.

Biography Links Tab

If you have separate web pages containing biographies of your ancestors, you can include links to those pages next to the corresponding names on your family pages. For example:

 Husband: John Doe  (biography)
    Born: 04 JUL 1776
. . .

Option Meaning
Registered version only Include links to biography web pages Place a check here to enable links to your biography web pages. When processing your GEDCOM file, GED-GEN will add a link next to an individual's name to your corresponding biography web page.
Link Text Specify a sentence or phrase to use with the links to your biography web pages. This text will appear next to an individual's name on your family pages.

Include the special term %LINK% at the place in the link text where the link label should appear. This is the word LINK enclosed within two percent signs. If you do not include %LINK%, the link label is simply appended to the end of the link text.

Here are some sample link text and link label combinations:

Link Text Link Label Resulting Link
(%LINK%) biography (biography)
(View a %LINK%) biography (View a biography)
[%Link%] Click here for more [Click here for more]
  biography biography

Link Label Specify the word or phrase that will appear as the actual link to a biography web page. This label will replace the term %LINK% where it appears in the link text. If a visitor to your website clicks on the link label, your biography page about that individual appears.
Link Prompt Specify the text that will appear when a visitor holds the mouse over a link to your biography web pages. This indicates to your visitor the purpose of the link.
Frame Target Leave this option empty for normal operation. When a visitor clicks a biography link, that page displays in place of your family page.

If you want the biography page to display in a new Internet browser window, enter the reserved name _blank (i.e., an underscore character followed by the word blank).

Advanced Users

If your website uses HTML frames, you can specify the frame in which to display a biography page. This option controls the target attribute in the link. Enter the name of a frame window, or use the reserved name _top to replace your frameset page.

Relative folder path for biography files

Specify the folder where your biography web pages reside. This must be a relative folder path. To automatically determine a relative folder path, click Browse.

Leave this option blank if your biography web pages are in the same folder as your family pages, that is, they are in the destination folder.

The research notes field in many genealogy programs is generally not sufficient to integrate text, pictures and diagrams into a pleasing website presentation. That's why GED-GEN does not rely on an individual's notes field to tell the whole story. The Biography Links custom feature enhances your genealogy website by integrating your own web pages with the family pages generated.

Although biography web pages were intended, you can use this feature to link any type of web page. You may have a gallery of pictures, a graphical family tree, or a report generated by your favorite genealogy program. If you do not want to call it a biography, simply change the Link Label text above.

Advanced Users

You can include an internal link after the HTML file name you specify for a biography link. If you want to go to a particular place in the linked file, specify the file name as, for example,

report.html#grandpa

This assumes you have an internal link, <a name="grandpa"></a>, in your report.html file.

Relationship Text Tab

This feature is designed to make it easier for visitors to your website to navigate your family pages. Often when visitors venture off to look at family pages, they have difficulty returning to your direct ancestors. For instance once they return from looking at your ancestor's brother's family, they may not remember which brother is your ancestor.

GED-GEN can include a brief phrase under an individual's name that identifies that person as a direct relation. GED-GEN does not automatically calculate kinship. Rather it relies on you to supply an appropriate phrase for the individuals you want. The following is an example of how it will look, assuming John Doe is your great, great-grandfather and you have defined his relationship text to be "Second Great-grandfather."

 Husband: John Doe
Second Great-grandfather
    Born: 04 JUL 1776
. . .

In addition, when this individual appears as a child rather than a husband or wife, that child's sequence number is displayed in a different color (i.e., the same color you define for "active link" on the Attributes tab). This allows easier identification and therefore easier navigation. For example:

 02 (M): Jacob Doe
Born: 12 FEB 1775
. . .
 03> (M): John Doe
Second Great-grandfather
Born: 04 JUL 1776
. . .
 04 (F): Jane Doe
Born: 18 MAR 1779
. . .

Option Meaning
Include relationship text Place a check here to enable relationship text processing. When generating family pages, GED-GEN will add the corresponding relationship text under an individual's name wherever they appear as a husband, wife or child. The text will also appear next to the individual's name in the index.

Individual Images Tab

You can include a picture of an individual next to that individual's name on your family pages. These images are intended to be separate from any "scrapbook" feature you may use in your favorite genealogy program. Therefore GED-GEN does not currently use multimedia records that might be in your GEDCOM file. In fact many GEDCOM files will not contain images.

Instead, GED-GEN relies on separate image files you keep elsewhere on your website. You will define the name of an image file for each desired individual. Not every individual need have an image. This is an example of how images will look:

 02 (M): Jacob Doe
    Born: 12 FEB 1884
          . . .
Image
 03 (M): Joseph Doe
    Born: 04 JUL 1886
          . . .
Image

Since these images will appear on your family pages, each image file should be small. For best results all image files should be sized consistently. GED-GEN does not re-scale or manipulate your images. However it does attempt to determine their sizes. It uses this information to better display images. GED-GEN can read only GIF and JPEG images. These files usually have the extension .gif, .jpg or .jpeg. If it cannot find your specified image file, or it is not a GIF or JPEG image, GED-GEN will not determine its size, but it will still be displayed.

An image width of 50 to 75 pixels works well. You will need to use an image editing program to crop and re-scale your pictures. If you re-scale your images, remember to maintain the aspect ratio. This will keep the height in proportion to the width without stretching the image.

Option Meaning
Registered version only Include images Place a check here to enable image processing. When generating family pages, GED-GEN will add the corresponding image next to an individual's name.

Leave this option blank if your image files are in the same folder as your family pages, that is, in the destination folder.
